For years this VHS of Rainbow live in concert was the only official live video recording available to fans. It’s an impressive show filmed in San Antonio, Texas in 1982 featuring the Straight Between The Eyes album line up and the majority of the songs are from Rainbow’s post 1979 back catalogue with only ''Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll'' from the Dio era. The concert closes with the obligatory ''Smoke On The Water''. Now available on DVD release complete with the long deleted The Final Cut which compiles the band’s promotional videos from 1979-1983. Two long deleted Rainbow home video releases make their DVD debut on this double disc set: LIVE BETWEEN THE EYES is a concert that was filmed in San Antonio, Texas, in August 1982 during the Straight Between The Eyes Tour and THE FINAL CUT, first issued in 1987, contains eight of the later Rainbow promo videos, plus two songs from the Japanese tour of 1984.
PERSONNEL: Ritchie Blackmore – guitar; Roger Glover – bass; Bobby Rondinelli – drums; Joe Lynn Turner – vocals; David Rosenthal – keyboards; Dee Beale, Lin Robinson - backing vocals.
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow first "oficial" video, recorded in 1982 during their Straight Between The Eyes Tour is a very good example of their sound at the time: gone are the long improvisations and the seventeen minute solos. What we have here is the hard rock version of the band, the notorious "Joe Lynn Turner years". Yes, there is some guitar extravaganza and improvisation during the Blues segment. Sign of the times. Blackmore seems to be one of the most conscious man about the moving tastes of the public. And the "new" version of the band fits right in. Which, by the way, does not mean "selling out" or bad music being produced, much on the contrary: you still have Blackmores unique guitar playing. The "man in black" is in top form here, both as a musician and showman, the band is hot and the songs are very good. It´s interesting to see how the band is delivering the goods, has more of an edge and power live, without Roger Glovers slick studio production. Joe Lynn Turner proves what most people tries to ignore: that he is a great singer and can handle different styles with ease. The rhythm section of Roger Glover and drummer Bobby Rondinelli are tight. The twenty-one year old keyboards man David Rosenthal is surprisingly at ease with his instruments, delivering his parts like a seasoned pro. Ok, there are few surprises. Blackmore is an enigma, though. His blown-up guitar sound saves the day, but his performance is baffling. He alternates between shredding leads and, at various times, beating on his guitar with a frisbee, his own guitar cable, a drum stick, his rear end, and more. Is he high? He keeps leaving the stage and coming back acting curiously. It's hard to say, but this still could qualify as the ultimate Rainbow listening experience. The whole band really shines. Still is amazing to see how unique, creative and wonderful guitarist Blackmore is when he puts his hands on the instrument. And how good he is at choosing the right backing band. Interesting enough, there are two girls backing singers that you can hear during the whole show, but are nowhere to be seen. If you doubt why Ritchie Blackmore is hailed as one of the best guitarists ever, just watch him playing. A ''must have'' for fans of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore and Hard Rock in general.
