With The Allfather Awakens, Amon Amarth have created a definitive 10-song masterpiece that cements the legacy of their spectacularly memorable riffs and unflinching aural power even further. The album opens with the epic tale of 'Gjallarhorn', followed by the heroic battlefield narrative 'Eight Legs of Thunder'. 'Upphaf', a stanza from the prophetic poem Völuspá translated into English, marks the band’s first acoustic offering.
For The Allfather Awakens, the band's 13th album since 1998's Once Sent from the Golden Hall, the iconic Swedish melodic death metallers took a new songwriting approach. The album came to life across two recording sessions, months apart, at producer Jacob Hansen’s studio in Denmark. Rather than waiting until they were off the road, Amon Amarth began writing songs while touring. The first session took place in spring 2025, and the final recording was completed in March 2026.
This approach allowed the musicians to focus intensely on each track, resulting in an album where each song was treated as a single. “We worked on one song at a time and made each one as good as possible,” says guitarist Olavi Mikkonen. 'Then we recorded one song at a time until each track was completely finished — drums, guitars and vocals. Only then did we start on the next one.”
