THE CHESS 50th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION.
Spanning a brief period between 1952 and 1954, THE COMPLETE '50S CHESS RECORDINGS captures the legendary bluesman in the early stage of his recording career. This collection kicks off with the rare single "Mad Man Blues" and "Hey Boogie," two raw, primitively recorded tracks that showcase the primal blues fire of Hooker's rich voice and raunchy guitar style. Though the remaining tracks are somewhat better recorded, the higher fidelity only serves to bring Hooker's dark, powerful sound into full focus. The majority of the performances on this collection are basically solo performances, with Hooker's foot stamping out the beat on a wooden floor as he coaxes some amazing rhythms and sounds out of his guitar. Later recordings like "Tell Me Baby" and "Big Fine Woman" feature a full band and are quite reminiscent of Hooker's classic early '60s recordings for the Vee-Jay label. THE COMPLETE '50S CHESS RECORDINGS provides a fascinating look at a rarely heard but very rewarding period in the career of one of the greatest blues artists to ever step up to a microphone.
PERSONNEL: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Eddie Kirkland (guitar); Johnny Hooks (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Miller (trumpet); Bob Thurman (piano); Tom Whitehead (drums).
Scraping by as a school janitor when his recording career began, you couldn’t blame Hooker for hustling his way through the early-’50s. Coining and shedding aliases to let him record outside his contract with the Modern label – depending on the session, he might be billed as the Boogie Man or John Lee Cooker – the bluesman’s cash-in-hand years are a thrilling ragbag, perhaps with more diamonds out there yet to discover. In the meantime, this Chess comp is the closest thing to definitive, home to foot-stomping one-man classics like ''Mad Man Blues'', ''Leave My Wife Alone'' and ''Sugar Mama''. Hooker bounced around between label affiliations like crazy in the 1950s, recording under almost as many fake names as he did labels during that decade. His two lasting record company hookups occurred with Chess in the early 1950s and Vee-Jay later on in the decade. All of Hooker's Chess masters from that decade (he would later record in the '60s for them as well) are here on this two-disc, 31-track collection. Unlike other Chess artists, Hooker did little of his recording in Chicago, preferring to work out of his Detroit home base, where he continued to record for other labels under a variety of pseudonyms. His 1951 Chicago session excepted, the rest of the tracks emanate from Detroit sessions that also saw issuance on the local Gone, H-Q and Fortune labels. This is early John Lee at his solo-guitar, foot-stomping best, featuring boogies and introspective, slow blues that rival his best work. Some of the Detroit tracks reveal inbred distortion that can't be overcome even with modern day noise reduction techniques, but don't let that deter you from sampling some of the best John Lee Hooker available on compact disc for a second.
