T. REX is a 1970 album by Marc Bolan's band T. Rex, the first under that name and the fifth since their debut as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1968. It was released on 18th December 1970 by record labels Fly and Reprise. The US pressing of the LP concluded with "Ride a White Swan" rather than "The Children of Rarn". The sleeve design was unusual, requiring a sideways look to unfold the full cover, or to have the artwork sideways to remove the LP. The cover pic was taken that summer by Pete Sanders at his parents' home in Selbridge. White pancake face makeup was worn by Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn, while Bolan clutched his electric guitar to suit the new electric image he was trying to create. A preface to the printed lyrics states "Dedicated To All Who Are And Will Be Forevermore". On 18th October 2004, the album was remastered and reissued by A&M Records with nine bonus tracks. This album rocks yet has an beautiful folky quality that is truly unique. This blend of English rock/swagger and mystical folk makes this album unlike any other album you are likely to hear by anyone ever. Get the Expanded Edition with alternate takes and Bolan's smash single "Ride A White Swan" backed with his version of "Summertime Blues", originally by one of his main influences, Eddie Cochran.

Tyrannosaurus Rex's transformation from oracles of U.K. hippie culture to boogie-friendly rock stars began with the album A Beard Of Stars, released in early 1970 when the band picked up electric instruments, and by the time the year was out, Marc Bolan had pared their name down to the more user-friendly T. Rex and dropped their first album with the new moniker T. REX. It’s on the truncated T. REX that the balance shifts decidedly from the acoustic to the electric Bolan. This is the surfeit of sweetness that later T. Rex fans would expect, as Bolan chugs along blissfully to the febrile drums of his own imagination, spewing out nectar-nursed rhymes about spaceships, shrinking potions, wizards and elf lords. In the queerly strange musical world of T. REX, you’re ushered in and out by ''The Children Of Rarn'', and treated to a skyfull of strange constellations in between. Maybe not as cherished as a “Metal Guru” or “Planet Queen”, but hearing them shoots the same honey into your brain veins, though it doesn’t leave you jonesing for your next fix like Electric Warrior and The Slider do. Listening to T. REX, you’ll be reminded of David Bowie, and that’s no accident. Tony Visconti had just helmed the first proper Bowie album, and brought many of the same strange science-fiction sounds into the fold for Bolan’s fifth. T. REX isn’t a perfect record. You have no idea why “The Wizard” is almost nine minutes long. And Mickey Finn as a one-man rhythm section is about two men short of a good show. It’s the irrepressible impishness of Bolan that ultimately wins the day. Hearing him glide through a song like “One Inch Rock,” you realize that, given even an inch, Marc Bolan provides a mile of smiles in return. T. REX is the quiet before the storm of Electric Warrior, and it retains a loopy energy and easy charm that makes it one of Bolan's watershed works. Bolan fans always call this album the bridge between the acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex and the glam T. Rex. Marc Bolan was growing more as an artist with more electricity on almost every track. The outtakes arent up to much, but you'll really like this album in its own right and of course there was much more to come...
