J.J. Cale- #8- CD- 1983/2005- Audigram Inc./Mercury Records, Inc.- 042281115226- 400 grn
#8 is a 1983 album by J. J. Cale. It was his eighth studio album since his debut in 1971. This album would be the first in Cale's career to not make the charts, which probably was a major factor in him taking a sabbatical from the music business. European pressing of the 1983 album features 10 tracks including ''Money Talks'' with guest vocalist Christine Lakeland. This was his last album, released in 1983, before taking a long break from recording. It's a great album; highlights being: - "Money Talks", "Hard Times", "Unemployment", "Trouble In The City", "Teardrops In My Tequila" (penned by Paul Craft) and "Livin' Here Too". This is a darker album for JJ Cale and the album has a feel of "modern financial hardship blues". This is blues for today and Cale's observational lyrics are balanced with his words of experience and involvement; all well suited to even the situation we have during this recession. They're quite refreshing to hear alongside our present apathetic song writers and music industry who consider an important subject to be trivial teenage angst or in making political waves provide an abundance of expletives that only encourage the general public to dismiss the song as a banal immature rant. The album was produced during a time when post punk/new wave was at its height and social comment through artistic and popular media was all the rage. This album still stands up both musically and lyrically and is one of favourites of JJ Cale.

Twelve years and eight albums into his recording career, Cale's approach has changed little, and here is another collection of groove tunes that act as platforms for the artist's intricate guitar playing. He is sometimes accompanied by a female vocalist, co-writer Christine Lakeland. Mmm, back to "definitely so-so". For some reason, J. J. really got on a roll in those early Eighties - three albums in three years, when he'd only released five in the entire previous decade. And while Grasshopper was a definite triumph for him, the two records it was sandwiched in between are kinda fillerish. Shades was spoiled by too many unimaginative generic blues tunes; this one, named in such a defiantly unpretentious way, is spoiled by overemphasizing only one of Cale's aspects, that of the grim barroom rocker with an ominous edge.
