J.J. Cale- EBBETS FIELDS: The 1975 Broadcast- CD- 2014- Smokin’ Production- 823564642826- 400 grn
J.J. Cale is probably best remembered by a lot of people, people of a certain age certainly, as the man who wrote two of the biggest anthems of the 1970s - ''Cocaine'' and ''After Midnight'' - both popularised by Eric Clapton, but both written by the immortal Mr. Cale. On his own he was an incredible talent inventing the Tulsa Sound, a loose mash-up of Country, Rockabilly, Blues and Jazz rolled into one. His music was covered by many others too - everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Johnny Cash via Captain Beefheart had a go at the Cale songbook. But it remains his own interpretations of his own compositions that are the finest versions to seek out. The first nine tracks on this CD come from a remarkable live performance J.J. gave at the Ebbets Field club in Denver, Colorado; an intimate venue which more than once attracted the attention of local fire marshals when over 250 revelers were packed onto its modest dance floor. The year was 1975 and the month February, and before Cale arrived, local FM station KCUV FM 102.3 had set up their mobile studio in order to transmit the whole affair over the airwaves. Sadly only the nine songs contained herein were broadcast that night and so we are unable to provide the complete show, however at least four absolute Cale classics were included and these rub shoulders with four lesser known but equally brilliant J.J. numbers, along with a rousing version of Muddy Waters' ''Got My Mojo Workin''. Cale was between albums at this juncture in his career; the sublime Oakie had come out about a year before this gig, and it wouldn't be until September the following year that its successor Troubadour - the album that first introduced ''Cocaine'' to the world - was released. Sadly, this quite extraordinary composition, which partakers of said substance have suggested comes as close to explaining its effects as you can get while on the right side of the law, was not included. In fact nothing from either album was aired - the cuts included all came from 1972's Naturally and '73's Really - albums 1 & 2 for Cale. To complete this CD a stack of bonus tracks are included, and these rare cuts come from the very genesis of J.J.'s body of recorded work. While it was 1972 before a full solo album emerged from this musical pioneer, Cale had been involved in the business since the late 1950s. And it was during this time that he recorded six sides for the long defunct Chan label, the first two as A & B sides of his recording debut, released in 1958 and credited to Johnny Cale, and the remaining four in 1960 and 1961 as the Johnny Cale Quintet. And while these tracks may appear a long distance from the inimitable style and sound that Cale was best known for through the 1970s and beyond, they certainly offer a glimpse of the blues and rockabilly background that informed J.J. throughout his career. As far as the producers are aware these tracks have never been reissued nor included on any album since their original release on a tiny independent label over 50 years ago.
