The Black Crowes- AMORICA- CD- 1994/2002-
- American Recordings, LLC/UMG Recordings, Inc.- 731458694328- 400 grn
AMORICA (stylized as amorica) is the third studio album by U.S. rock band The Black Crowes. Spawned from the band's unreleased Tall album sessions, AMORICA was released on 1st November 1994, on American Recordings. AMORICA reached Gold status in the United States. The album cover notably featured a close-up photo of the pelvic region of a woman wearing a U.S. flag thong with pubic hair showing at the top of the thong. The photo was taken from the cover of the July 1976 issue of Hustler magazine. The album with this cover was subsequently banned from chain stores like Walmart and Kmart, resulting in the cover being censored with a solid black background displaying only the thong. On AMORICA, The Black Crowes finally come into their own, taking their cue from the most relaxed, groove-oriented tracks on their previous album. While the album contains no immediately obvious singles, the songs are the best the band has ever written, stretching out into a hard, jam-oriented, funky blues-rock. The Black Crowes' influences are still discernible (no band celebrates the glory days of rock culture quite as enthusiastically), but they use the music of The Stones, The Faces, and Little Feat much the same way The Stones used the music of Chuck Berry. It's a starting point that leads the band into a new direction, incorporating different musical genres, and making the music original. That sense of reinterpretation is what keeps AMORICA fresh.
PERSONNEL: Chris Robinson – vocals, harmonica; Rich Robinson – guitar; Marc Ford – guitar; Johnny Colt – bass guitar; Steve Gorman – drums; Eddie Harsch – keyboards; Jimmy Ashhurst – mandolin; Eric Bobo – percussion; Bruce Kaphan – pedal steel guitar; Andy Sturmer – assorted musical gifts.
The compositions that make up AMORICA are largely reworked versions of Chris’ baby, the previous year’s Tall sessions. Re-recording or none, it’s obvious that everything The Crowes have done up to this point has turned to gold, and the performances glow with spontaneity and an air of artistic freedom, anything resembling a radio single existing purely by happenstance. These goddamned hippies are out of control, the whole thing coming across as a no-holds-barred soiree in the studio. Smoke and powder flow free in the background of twisted grooves like “High Head Blues”, quirky organ lines twinkling against odd starts and stops. “Downtown Money Waster” sounds like a lost gem from 1968, built on a barrelhouse stomp, steel slide and random handclaps erupting, like Roy Harper is going to climb up from under the table and yowl out a few bars at any moment. If there’s one consistent element in this free love hoedown, it’s keyboardist Eddie Harsch. His organ and piano flourishes are the special sauce of this record. Check out the mellifluous organ washes in “Wiser Time”, and especially the poetically mournful closer, “Descending”, a track drifting on a sumptuous piano melody jotted by slide accents from Rich Robinson and Marc Ford. Perhaps not the gazillion-seller delivered with previous recordings, but a great example of an unhinged band fearlessly channel-surfing through fascinating trips and textures. Plays like something out of the 70s. Wears its influences on its sleeve. A retro southern gumbo. Filled with an irresistable bluesy boogie backed by the soulful vocals of Chris Robinson and the impressive fretwork of brother Rich. One of the better hard rock albums of the 90s. Classic.
