This album is DEDICATED to the memory of STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN.
MR. LUCKY is a 1991 album by American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist John Lee Hooker. Produced by Ry Cooder, Roy Rogers and Carlos Santana under the executive production of Mike Kappus, the album featured musicians including Keith Richards, Blues Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Winter and three inductees of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Van Morrison, Booker T. Jones and Johnnie Johnson. And also Chester D. Thompson, who once played with Santana, on keyboards, has collaborated on writing a song on the album. John Lee, he of the mojo hand and wearing voice, says, ''Bad luck can't do me no harm." This audiophile treat finds the Hook in some very special company. Co-producers Roy Rogers, Ry Cooder and Carlos Santana persuaded the likes of Albert Collins, Robert Cray, John Hammond, Johnnie Johnson, Van Morrison, Keith Richards, Nick Lowe and Johnny Winter among others to join in and the result is one terrific record. This original analog recording is beautifully recorded and a highlight to the ump-teenth rejuvenation in the 'Hooks career. The highlight is "I Cover The Waterfront," wherein true believers Hooker and Morrison go deep into the mystic.

His latest for Virgin's blues division, contains some entertaining material. It's not a classic, but it's not half-bad either. John Lee is best stripped down to his elemental voice and guitar, but it is fun as the collaborators such as Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Santana and Johnny Winter scorch some of these songs, without overshadowing John. The record is best on the tracks with the sensibilities of John Hammond, Ry Cooder and Van Morrison who each add their talents to one of these songs. John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon are the last of a generation of giants that plugged Mississippi’s Delta blues into urban America. Dixon went to Chicago and became a mainstay at Chess Records, where he played bass, produced, arranged and wrote songs for electrified Delta wailers such as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, who, like Hooker, had migrated to the Windy City from rural Mississippi. Hooker, who has just turned seventy-four, left Mississippi and eventually made his way to Detroit nightclubs so noisy that his only recourse was to strum his open tuned guitar with such ferocity as to put an indelible stamp on rock & roll. Blame it on the boogie and you’re blaming it on John Lee Hooker. MR. LUCKY refines the strategy of The Healer, from 1989, which paired Hooker with a variety of rootsy rockers who had been touched by his rhythmic mojo. While there’s nothing here quite as stunning as Hooker’s saucy, Grammy-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt on “I’m in the Mood,” MR. LUCKY is all around a sharper fit. The players on this outing aren’t rock stars paying tribute to a legend, but superb sidemen for a great bluesman. As Hooker moves musically from the city back to the Delta on MR. LUCKY, he travels a circle that in his rare hands remains truly unbroken.
