ISLAND REMASTERS Series.
This is an amazing box set where every song is an alternative version or new mix. 80 re-mastered tracks on 5 CDs including alternate takes and mixes, singles masters, stereo mixes, unreleased recordings, live recordings and associated recordings. Three career-spanning discs of album outtakes, alternative mixes and remixes, one of live material and one of assorted Free side-projects. First, you must let go off the fact that you are shelling out money for music recorded roughly 70 years ago...once you do that the journey is like a trip to heaven. Free were the band that was masterful in every tempo of song – whether it be the straight blues rocker or the ballad. Robert Plant was competent at ballads, he could never touch you the way Paul Rodgers did. CD’s 1-3 chronicle a journey through all six Free studio albums with alternate takes, alternate mixes, singles masters, stereo mixes and unreleased recordings. CD4 is unreleased live recordings from shows they had done in Sunderland and Croydon in England. The sound is immaculate as is the whole of the box set, owing to state-of-the-art technology. CD5 is various recordings that the individual members of Free created during the band’s couple of break-ups which occured during 1971 and 1972. This is competent enough and this CDs complement each other pefectly. You'll very impressed by the re-mastering effort. Free were a great band but poor production can really kill enthusiasm. After years of listening to the hiss laden LPs and cassettes, these songs will now a revelation for you. Free was a powerful, majestic hard rock band at their peak. A lot of their power came from their playing, and their songwriting was epic, but often elliptical. As such, they're for hard rock connoisseurs, spirited, dedicated following largely to unlock their treasures, especially in the years following their breakup. For those fans, the five-disc SONGS OF YESTERDAY is a godsend. This is not a box for listeners with less than a consuming interest in the band since this contains a wealth of unreleased material. Even if you think you want total immersion in Free, this will not be as effective as purchasing each of their albums. As long as you know what you're getting into, this isn't bad. For anyone else, it's a bit much, and it doesn't quite tell the story in the right fashion, since it really offers a mirror image, alternate version rather than the real thing. In many ways, Free were the perfect embodiment of British rock music: raw but poised, teenaged but mature-sounding, sexy but rumpled, idealistic and flawed, brilliant and doomed. And with a fucking great name, too. But, hey, teenage hubris is rock’s prime fuel and Paul Rodgers had buckets of it about his person. Free never really cut a consistently strong album. The closest they came was probably Fire And Water – the one with bloody ''All Right Now''. Crisp and supple, it’s surely Free’s greatest moment. Generous helping of outtakes, remixes of songs with different guitar solos and things prised from the can add much to their magic. SONGS OF YESTERDAY allows us to examine them working and provides useful clues about how those four lads wove their magical fabric, making room for one another to soar. Overall, this is an exciting journey through the Free legacy – refreshing with a phenomenal sound on each disc. Free were the most charismatic, talented band to grace the planet ever!
