- EastWest Records/Magnet Records Ltd./Warner Communications Company- 022924237829- 400 grn
DANCING WITH STRANGERS is the ninth studio album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released on 14th September 1987. Rea had put a multi-track recording desk in his garage, and made the whole album with three microphones. Nobody heard it, nobody witnessed it. It was the first time Rea had demoed and partly recorded the album at home, which gave him more control and helped cement his vision. It became Rea's first major success in the UK. The album features renowned Irish piper Davy Spillane. DANCING WITH STRANGERS is definitely a pop-rock album. The combination of Rea's throaty vocal and spine-tingling guitar create an atmosphere of fatalistic acceptance, spiritual unhappiness and wanderlust which would prove comparatively easy to transport in a new musical direction. This is a quality Chris Rea record. Loads of catchy, atmospheric tunes. "Joys Of Christmas", "Windy Town", "Gonna Buy A Hat", "Loving You Again" and "Lets Dance" are all superb. To be honest there are no dud tracks on this one and Rea is at the top of his game. With a career spanning over 40 years and over 30 million album sales, Chris Rea’s distinctive husky-gravel vocal and incredible body of work has seen him become one of the most loved solo artists the UK have ever produced. A formidable songwriter, and still playing live to this day, he has released an incredible 24 studio albums.
PERSONNEL: Chris Rea – vocals, guitar, accordion, harmonica, brass, acoustic guitar, rhythm guitar, banjo, slide guitar, keyboards, acoustic piano, all other instruments, strings; Kevin Leach – acoustic piano, organ, Hammond organ; Jerry Donahue – lead guitar, acoustic guitar, rhythm guitar; Eoghan O'Neill – bass, drums, percussion; Martin Ditcham – drums, percussion; Davy Spillane – Uilleann pipes, low whistle.
To the public, Chris Rea was still the blonde chap with the strangely gruff voice, making the kind of music people bought on Compact Discs. The album campaign was accompanied by some beautiful watercolour paintings, and a few tracks aside, the overall mood was free of the heavy-handedness and intensity of later works. This was Chris Rea’s final album for the Magnet Records label, before signing to WEA. It’s a transitional piece, capturing the artist either on the cusp of a real commercial breakthrough or at the moment when they begin to reach their potential. On DANCING WITH STRANGERS you can hear Chris Rea not only formulating the style, but finally beginning to leave behind the sometimes awkward attempts to satisfy his record label. The days of creative compromise, meagre studio budgets, uncomfortable photo shoots, blonde bubble-perms, and questionable fashion choices were about to end. One of the revelations is the fact that the sound of DANCING WITH STRANGERS is virtually created by just two people. And, on several tracks, Chris Rea is playing most of the instruments, including the drums. DANCING WITH STRANGERS benefits from a “live” sound, albeit one cleverly constructed and overdubbed to create the impression of a living, breathing, band perfomance. Each Chris Rea album in the mid-1980s tended to have a loose theme, or be inspired by particular events in his life. DANCING WITH STRANGERS is, by and large, simply a collection of excellent songs, superbly played and produced with just the right combination of rough edges and radio-friendly sheen. This album will holds the strongest memories for you. Old version is now still worth keeping!
