A FIRE IN THE SKY is a collection by the British rock band Deep Purple, released on 15th September 2017. The collection includes all the English group's most successful songs (in reverse chronological order) from the album Now What?! (2013) to the album Shades Of Deep Purple (1968). Deep Purple has recorded a career-spanning anthology that available as a single CD and a three-CD set. The single-disc version of A FIRE IN THE SKY features 20 songs and focuses mainly on the band's singles. The heavy hitters are here of course - "Smoke On The Water" and "Highway Star" - but so are gems like "Perfect Strangers," the title track from the band's platinum-certified album from 1984, as well as "Hell To Pay," from 2013's Now What?! Each version of the set, which was released on 8th September 2017 in North America through Rhino Records, with an international release followed later in the year on 15th September 2017, includes a selection of songs chosen from the 19 studio albums that Deep Purple recorded between 1968 and 2013. The three-disc version of A FIRE IN THE SKY dives even deeper into Purple's past, with 40 songs, and includes at least one track from every studio album through Now What?! It also provides a showcase for the group's various incarnations through the years. To date, more than a dozen musicians have appeared on a Deep Purple album. Among the highlights are the single edit version of "Woman From Tokyo," the U.S. single edit for "Burn," and the radio edit of "Bad Attitude." There has been no shortage of Deep Purple compilations over the years, but unlike some of the British hard rock legends' contemporaries, they've managed a fairly consistent stream of output since their 1968 debut. A FIRE IN THE SKY, a 40-track career retrospective that includes at least one song from every studio album through 2013's Now What?!, is easily the most comprehensive anthology that the band has released to date - a more manageable, largely singles-oriented 20-track version is also available. Despite cycling through too many lineup iterations to mention, the band has consistently adhered to the heavy blues-rock foundation that made career highlights like "Hush," "Smoke On The Water," "Highway Star," and "Woman From Tokyo" so essential. Mid- to late-career offerings like "Perfect Strangers," "Call Of The Wild," "Rapture Of The Deep," and "Hell To Pay" may lack some of the bluster of those classic rock radio staples, but they still feel vital, suggesting that the key to hard rock longevity is sometimes just staying in the game.
