CAMDEN ORIGINALS Series.
PURPLEXED featuring over 70 minutes of the finest moments to be heard on Deep Purple RCA albums. This compilation leaves quite perplexed. Except the fact of a label desire to create a Deep Purple compilation, not understand the idea here. This "work" mixes live and studio tracks. From 1990 to 1996. What do we get here? One track from the infamous Slaves And Masters (and one of the weakest one of it) "King Of Dreams"! Two tracks from the very good Perpendicular: "The Aviator" which is the weakest track of this album. The second one is fabulous. "Loosen My Strings" is a great rock ballad with one of the most melodious chorus of any Deep Purple song so far. A great, inspired and emotional guitar break will bring you (almost) to heaven. The background piano playing from Jon Lord is absolutely wonderful. This is almost a prog track ! Three tracks from The Battle Rages On. The fabulous title track, the best track of the album "Anya" and quite surprinsingly, one of the poorest ones "Solitaire". Four tracks from their live album Come Hell Or Highwater: "Highway Star" and "Speed King" not being the best ones either from this live album. This version of "Child In Time" is also quite questionable. Shorter Ritchie solo (he was on his way out and for good this time) compensated by some Jon's ones (like they used to render in their early Mark II era : as soon as September 1969 - at the Royal Albert Hall for their "Concerto" album. "Smoke On The Water" is great, untill Ian Gillan asks the audience to participate. As you have noticed, not quite positive with this compilation effort (to say the least).
PERSONNEL: Joe Lynn Turner, Ian Gillan - vocals; Ritchie Blackmore, Steve morse - guitars; Roger Glover - bass; Ian Paice - drums; John Lord - organ, keyboards.
But what songs Deep Purple wrote in the 1990's! In this compilation there are the usual live versions of classic 1970's songs of Mk II, very tasty and metal. Two songs with Joe Lynn Turner. One is "King Of Dreams", a true masterpiece. Steve Morse is represented by two songs. One is "The Aviator", a normally song. The other is "Loosen My Strings", a masterpiece. All the band is great but Steve Morse... Sublime in technique, sublime in solo, sublime in megic and feeling... Who is Ritchie Blackmore? And all in a simple Hard Rock song that is a pure Heavy Metal song. The rest are Mk II songs. "The Battle Rages On" and "Anya" are great song for technique and feeling. "Solitaire" is a great song for magic. The problem is that these songs are close to Hard Rock and AOR. But... Is this a problem? No, because Deep Purple in 1990's remain a band with great songs and an incredible magic. Probably PURPLEXED is not the definitive BMG period (1990's) album. But as Deep Purple compilation (one of the too much Purple's compilation) is good... Extremely good. Only for die-hard fans.
