COME HELL OR HIGH WATER is a live CD by the hard rock group Deep Purple. It was recorded on 16th October 1993 at Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany and at the NEC in Birmingham on 9th November 1993. The album is one of the last to feature Ritchie Blackmore, as he quit after the concert on 17th November 1993 in Helsinki, Finland. He was replaced by Joe Satriani for the rest of the tour and later by Steve Morse. In 1993, the reunited "classic" lineup of Deep Purple toured just long enough to record this live album, before guitarist Ritchie Blackmore remembered why he hated the other members in the first place and bailed again. As the aging Deep Purple machine continues to chug away, fans are thrust this leaky live-preserver. Do we really need to hear this once-proud lineup again going through the tired motions of "Highway Star," "Speed King," and "Child In Time?" To be fair, the group turns heads with what appears, at first, to be a rejuvenating revision of "Smoke On The Water." Ritchie Blackmore launches into a mean, dirty riff, but the whole mess degenerates into a 10-minute jam complete with audience call and response.
PERSONNEL: Ian Gillan – vocals; Ritchie Blackmore – guitar; Jon Lord – organ, keyboards; Roger Glover – bass; Ian Paice – drums.
Ritchie Blackmore's issues with the presence of a cameraman on his side of the stage at the start of the Birmingham concert prompted the guitarist to return to his dressing room until the cameraman was removed. This leads to a longer than usual 'guitar-free' intro into ''Highway Star'' and several truncated guitar solo spots through the show. The rest of the band's dissatisfaction with the behaviour of their soon-to-be-departed guitarist is evident in their interviews. The CD features songs from the Stuttgart show, with the exception of "Anyone's Daughter", taken from Birmingham. The full concert versions of the Stuttgart and Birmingham shows were released in 2006 as a four CD box-set Live In Europe 1993 by Sony/BMG, each concert having its own gatefold sleeve and paper CD-liners. In 2007 each show had a separate release, in a jewel-case, but the Birmingham show was soon deleted, due to Ian Gillan's protest about it being re-released. Did nobody notice the excellent, superb sound quality on this one? The best live recording ever, in terms of crystal clear mixing, punch and transparency... And only Birmingham was shite, thanx to Ritchie's mood, Stuttgart was excellent, as proven by the double CD of that concert, which came out a bit later. It is an excellent swan song for the definite Deep Purple line-up, no matter how many repetitive and predictable shows with Steve Morse have followed up to today... This is an excellent live document. And recommended to you all.
