NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT is American jam band Blues Traveler's tenth studio album, released on August 26, 2008. In a notable departure from previous Blues Traveler releases, the album includes a spoken word piece featuring Bruce Willis. During early writing and production of this album, the members of Blues Traveler began to experiment with re-arrangements of various older songs, and put this album on hold to record Cover Yourself for their twentieth anniversary. The recording sessions for the two albums were held back-to-back. As their history demonstrates and NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT confirms, Blues Traveler have consistently managed to avoid stagnation and continue moving forward. The new material also makes a strong case for the introspective side that's always been a key element of lyricist Popper's persona. The heart-tugging lyrics of the opening track "Forever Owed" were inspired by the singer's trip to Afghanistan and Iraq, while the poignant "Borrowed Time" is a bittersweet meditation on mortality and transience, inspired both by the recent passing of bandmates Chan and Tad Kinchla's father, and by Popper's feelings for his beloved and aging dog. "Free Willis" is a particularly aggressive embodiment of the creative risks that the ever-restless quintet took in writing and recording NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT. Rather than fall back on established routines, the musicians challenged themselves.
PERSONNEL: John Popper - vocals, harmonica; Chandler Kinchla - guitars; Ben Wilson - Keyboards; Tad Kinchla - Bass; Brendan Hill - Drums; Bruce Willis - Vocals, harmonica; Dave Ralicke - Baritone, Tenor and Alto Sax; Jordan Katz - Trumpet.
A switch apparently flipped within the group, and Blues Traveler decided they had spent enough time playing for the faithful, so they signed with Verve Forecast and turned in NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT, which defies all expectations by being Blues Traveler's first full-fledged pop album. Sure, the bandmembers crank their amps slightly on a couple of occasions, grinding out bluesy three-chord riffs and at one point inviting Bruce Willis in for a free-form rant called "Free Willis," which isn't nearly as strange as it thinks it is, but NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT kicks off with a slowly creeping fog of keyboards, subdued rhythm, and mellow strumming. "Forever Owed" does such a good job of establishing a quiet, serene mood that it comes as no surprise when the drum loops and synthesized squawks surface on the second song, "You, Me And Everything." By then, it becomes clear that, far from following through on the implied violence of the title, NORTH HOLLYWOOD SHOOTOUT is as careful and calculating as Blues Traveler have ever been, a collection of songs with sanded melodies that have the veneer of adult pop and perhaps would be if they weren't sung by the hiccupping John Popper, whose harmonica is often buried far far deep in the mix -- an inadvertent metaphor for the album as a whole, which suppresses the band's identity in favor of a highly burnished set of updated yacht rock. It's an album designed to win back fair-weather fans, which only raises questions. And if they are, is it worth alienating the faithful with a perfectly pleasant, rather forgettable set of like this?
