GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!: THE ROLLING STONES IN CONCERT is the second live album by the Rolling Stones, released on 4 September 1970 on Decca Records in the UK and on London Records in the US. It was recorded in New York City and Baltimore in November 1969, just before the release of Let It Bleed. It is the first live album to reach Number One in the UK. It was reported to have been issued in response to the well known bootleg Live'r Than You'll Ever Be. This was also the band's final release under the Decca record label and not under their own label Rolling Stones Records. Yes, the original GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!: THE ROLLING STONES IN CONCERT album is a superb live album. Now remastered by Bob Ludwig it captures The Rolling Stones at the peak of their live powers in November 1969 at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The performance is pulsating from the opening bars of "Jumping Jack Flash" through to a storming "Street Fighting Man". Good to hear "Carol" and "Little Queenie" in there and "Live With Me" is always welcome. Apparently "Sympathy For The Devil" was song three on the actual set list, this is alterable if you are playing it digitally. In August 2002, GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!: THE ROLLING STONES IN CONCERT was reissued in a new remastered album by ABKCO Records.
PERSONNEL: Mick Jagger – vocals; harmonica; Keith Richards – guitar, backing vocals; Mick Taylor – guitar; Bill Wyman – bass guitar; Charlie Watts – drums; Ian Stewart – piano.
Five Stars for the hilarious photo of Charlie on the cover before we’ve even heard any music. But as for the music, the first thing you need to know is that this is in no way a greatest hits set - no ''Satisfaction'' and the majority of the songs here are deeper cuts rather than the obvious Aftermath era hits. If you’re willing to go along with that though, this recording of The Stones in New York just after Mick Taylor joined finds the band in fine form though we don’t agree with the consensus that it’s one of the greatest live albums of all time. Some numbers such as ''Stray Cat Blues'' and ''Street Fighting Man'' don’t have the impact that the studio versions did. Despite the great Glyn Johns being on the boards, the sound, particularly the vocals, can lack weight or focus leading to a track like Chuck Berry’s ''Little Queenie'' feeling very ordinary. That said, there are reasons to own the album. The urgent, sped up ''Live With Me'', the guitars so fat it sounds like Black Sabbath, is great. As is the bass-heavy, funky version of ''Sympathy For The Devil''. ''Love In Vain'' is also terrific despite the lack of bells and whistles, the simple acoustic lament just letting the songwriting speak for itself. And who can resist ''Honky Tonk Women''? A decent, concise snapshot of The Stones at their peak, GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!: THE ROLLING STONES IN CONCERT is sure to raise a smile and is worth hearing, but we might pick some of the later live albums with a more comprehensive track list and cleaner recording (probably Steel Wheels Live if you must know.)
