ORO INCENSO & BIRRA is the fifth studio album released by the Italian singer-songwriter Zucchero Fornaciari on 13th June 1989. As with his previous album Blue's, the album is credited to "Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari". Its title represents a pun on "oro incenso e mirra", the Italian for "gold, frankincense and myrrh", with mirra being replaced by birra, meaning beer. ORO INCENSO & BIRRA becoming the best-selling album internationally by an Italian until it was overtaken by Andrea Bocelli's album Romanza in 1997. Magazine Rolling Stone Italia included the album in its list of "The 100 Best Italian Music Albums Of All Time". This was the last Zucchero album to be sung entirely in Italian: subsequent albums have been released in international versions with English lyrics on some tracks. The guitar solo in "A Wonderful World" was written and performed by Eric Clapton, a close friend of Zucchero's. The Italian singer-songwriter Francesco De Gregori wrote the lyrics for the song "Diamante", one of Zucchero's biggest hits to date. On the album credits "Diamante" is dedicated to Diamante Arduini Fornaciari, Zucchero's grandmother. The song "Libera L'Amore" was composed by Ennio Morricone. The album also features guest performances by Clarence Clemons, Rufus Thomas, James Taylor and Jimmy Smith. In 1989 Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari is at peak creativity and this album is his best, a masterpiece of the Italian soul-blues genre.

The premises were already all in the previous Blue's two years earlier: the gospel derivations, the funky rhythmic alternating with moments of great melodic solemnity and then the rock to modulate an erotic pulse that takes place. expresses in lyrics that are sometimes sensual, other times rough, rabid and dense with screaming melancholy. The tracks are nine in all and are still beautiful today thirty years later: from the “Overdose (d'amore)” in the opening to the “Diavolo In me”, from “Nice (Nietzsche) Che Dice” to “Madre Dolcissima” and then “Il Mare Impetuoso...” and the splendid “Iruben Me” which is also appreciated for the excellent guitar solo by Corrado Rustici while the lighter “A Wonderful World” gives us the comparsata by Eric Clapton. This album also continues the lexical game of invented words between Italian and English next to the phonetic steak amid the evangelical image of oro, incense and myrrh as opposed to the beer of the title. Not to mention the accompaniment of The Choir Of Voices Of The Adventist Church Of The Seventh Day in the vocals of the irreverent “Il Mare Impetuoso...”. Sacred and profane that also mix in cover graphics with images of a baroque ascension of Christ along with floating beer cans. But here in the end everything is held and the success is perfect. This Sugar-balance between creativity and marketing will not last long, but what matters... ORO INCENSO & BIRRA remains one of the best albums of the decade 1980-90 and highly recommended to anyone looking for a overdose of good music.
