Glenn Hughes- SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK- CD- 2003- Frontiers Records- 8024391014813- 150 grn
SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK is a studio album by former Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Trapeze vocalist/ bassist Glenn Hughes. It was his ninth solo studio album and was released on 9th June 2003 on Frontier Records and Pony Canyon Records. Ever since the mid-'90s, that Glenn Hughes has been one busy gentleman. After sorting out his personal life, Hughes returned to recording and touring like a man possessed as he began cranking out album after album in a short period of time - including 2003's SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK. And for those who thought that Hughes may begin mellowing after the aforementioned "downtime," the rip-roaring album opener song in which Hughes sounds quite a bit like ex-Deep Purple bandmate David Coverdale, will silence any doubters. Also included is a tribute to Hughes' old pal John Bonham, that sounds like the spitting image of Bonham's band. Vocal-wise, Hughes sounds stronger than ever on SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK - something that can't be said for some of lead singer peers from the same classic rock era.
PERSONNEL: Glenn Hughes – Vocals, Bass; JJ Marsh – Guitars; Jeff Kollman – guitar; Chad Smith, Gary Ferguson – drums; Ed Roth – keyboards; Alex Ligertwood – background vocals; Billy Sheehan – bass.
Each Glenn Hughes album is a little masterpiece, it becomes a habit over time and this one will be no exception to the rule. An example to follow for all groups who take five years to release an album. One or two years is enough for Glenn Hughes and the quality never weakens. So what's new compared to Building The Machine which was hailed as his best album? Well, Glenn Hughes remains firmly anchored in the 70s sound and trip except that here, the album is much more Rock and direct than Building The Machine. Glenn Hughes refuses to age, he dyes his hair (yes, we don't care about that) and even allows himself, as in the Hughes Turner Project, a few references to Deep Purple MKIII and Rainbow from the Turner period. There is no doubt that this release from "The Voice Of Rock" is the best Glenn Hughes solo album. With SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK Glenn wanted to re-create that early 70's rock sound. Surrounding himself with all things 70's before and during the sessions, the opening track "In My Blood" features a prominent Hammond Organ. From there it just gets better. "Lost In The Zone" is just one of several killer tracks. Similarly "Gasoline" is a direct descendant from Burn not unlike "Lay Down, Stay Down". Fans of Hughes' more recent releases will find plenty to satisfy their needs. "Get You Stoned" is one such song. Hard hitting with a powerful riff, there is a quiet dreamy bridge before the band kicks in for the final chorus. "Written All Over Your Face" is comparatively laid back and features some nice guitarwork not unlike early Rainbow. The peace is shattered with "Standing On The Rock". More in line with Glenn Hughes' more recent material, this is 100mph no nonsense rock. The track which follows, "Courageous" is different again. With its ever moving bassline, tight harmonies and infectious chorus. A bonus track "Secret Life" is a welcome addition to the European CD version. Another nice touch is the Zep sounding tribute to Bonzo "Higher Places" which is sheer class. The closing track "Wherever You Go" is very reminiscent of Purple's "You Fool No one" and, though not as powerful. All in all, another great set from the ever productive Glenn Hughes. Whilst many of his fellow vocalists are losing some of their vocal prowess, Glenn seems to be better than ever. It's perhaps a little early to say if SONGS IN THE KEY OF ROCK is the best album but one thing is certain, it's a great vintage and it will be a landmark in the master's now full discography.
