Glenn Hughes- SOULFULLY LIVE IN THE CITY OF ANGELS- 2CD- 2004- Frontiers Records- 8024391020319- 200 grn
SOULFULLY LIVE IN THE CITY OF ANGELS is a live album and DVD by former Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Trapeze vocalist/ bassist Glenn Hughes. It was recorded at Sound Image Studio, Hollywood on 11th January 2004 in front of select group of guests. It was released on 20th September 2004 on Frontiers Records. This was the second official live solo album to be released by Hughes, or third if you include the Live In South America bonus CD that was released with Return Of Crystal Karma. It features a set-list of eleven songs, three from his 2003 solo album Songs In The Key Of Rock, one from his 2001 album Building The Machine, two from the Hughes/Thrall album, two Trapeze tracks and three Deep Purple numbers. Recorded live in North Hollywood the set is comprised of both classics and new tunes. And it quickly becomes apparent that Hughes has put together quite a backing band. Hughes’ band for the gig included regular guitarist JJ Marsh, additional guitarist George Nastos, keyboardist Ed Roth and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Hughes also recruited the singers Alex Ligertwood and the late Kevin DuBROW to perform backing vocals. The CD version of the release includes either one or two extra tracks, depending on the origin. All CDs include the previously unreleased song ''The Healer'', which was performed by Hughes alone and features his guitar playing. The European version of the CD includes ''Change'', which was originally featured on the Japanese version of Songs In The Key Of Rock. A US edition was released in March 2005 which coupled the CDs and the concert DVD into one package.

During the fifteen years following Deep Purple's initial split in 1976, singer/bassist Glenn Hughes issued albums on an extremely sporadic basis. Then came the early '90s, which saw Hughes get clean and sober, and the floodgates opened once more, as Hughes began feverishly making up for lost time - issuing seventeen albums between 1992 and 2005, both as a solo artist and as a collaborator with Joe Lynn Turner, Tony Iommi, etc. Perhaps wanting to prove that he still possessed "live chops", Hughes arranged an intimate performance in Los Angeles during early 2004, with an audience comprised of both friends and fans. Backing him was friend and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, whose playing here is more straight-ahead than, say, the gonzoid drumming of Mother's Milk, as well as two guitarists, a keyboardist, and two backup singers. Issued as a two-CD set, SOULFULLY LIVE IN THE CITY OF ANGELS does a fine job of proving that Hughes is musically and vocally stronger than ever. Longtime Hughes fans will undoubtedly be pleased with the all-encompassing track list, as it includes tracks from both Hughes' solo outings and Deep Purple-era gems. Standouts include the album-opening hard rocker "Can't Stop The Flood", the melodic "Wherever You Go", the slow-burning blues rocker "Seafull" and a great set-closing Purple trio, "Mistreated", "Gettin' Tighter" and "You Keep On Moving". As if that weren't enough reason to buy, there are also a pair of bonus studio tracks tacked on the end - "The Healer" and "Change". SOULFULLY LIVE IN THE CITY OF ANGELS is the best and most vibrant release that any Purple alumni, or the current version of Purple, for that matter, have issued in quite some time.
