Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were hugely successful in the mid-seventies with a series of UK top ten hits that included 'Judy Teen', 'Mr Soft', 'Here Comes the Sun' (a Beatles song) and their number one hit 'Make Me Smile Come Up and See Me'. Their early style was glam-rock, heavily influenced by Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. Steve was the dominant figure and took full artistic control, but his desire to try different things eventually caused him to lose direction and the good days were over. This compilation contains all those big hits and the best of his other music of the seventies. Steve made a brief comeback in the eighties and had a hit duet with Sarah Brightman with the title track to Phantom of the Opera, but that hit is outside the scope of this collection. Steve Harley might have hoped for a resurgence of interest in his music early in the new millennium when one of his fans got Steve's permission to name a racehorse Cockney Rebel. That horse looked set for a brilliant career after winning the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas in scintillating style and following it up with success in the equivalent Irish race. If he'd continued in that vein, he would have endeared himself to the British public, but injury cut short his racing career, though he lived to enjoy life at stud. So Steve was left to ponder what might have been (he once claimed that Cockney Rebel the racehorse was as good as Brigadier Gerard had been). If you enjoy seventies rock music, this compilation is definitely worth a listen.
