The late '90s saw former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman return to recording/touring duty with a new outfit, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. As expected, Bill Wyman managed to retain some bluesy elements from his previous band, but The Rhythm Kings primarily specialized in a musical form that made a surprise comeback during this time - swing. The multi-member band (which also featured such respected artists as Graham Broad, Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Janice Hoyte, Albert Lee, Frank Mead, Nick Payn, Beverley Skeete, and Terry Taylor, in addition to Bill Wyman) played the popular German music television program Ohne Filter: Musik Pur in April of 2000, which was issued as a DVD in 2002 under the title Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings IN CONCERT. The 12 track, hourlong concert does a fine job of showcasing the band's incredible musical chops, especially on such tracks as the concert-opening "Let The Good Times Roll," the obscure Rolling Stones track "Melody," and "Jump Jive And Wail," among others. Much as he loves his post-'Stones blues 'n' roots supergroup, the quiet bassist is content to remain just that in Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, captured in the studios of the German TV music programme Ohne Filter - Musik Pur ("Unfiltered pure music" - snappy, or what?). The musicians give a good account of a selection from the band's recorded output. Look out in particular for the excellent "Walking One And Only", "Anyway The Wind Blows" and the stonking workout at the end of the concert. Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings includes Graham Broad, Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Albert Lee, Bill Wyman's songwriting partner Terry Taylor plus various other players, all of whom clearly love what they're doing. Georgie Fame seems to be the frontman a lot of the time, a role which suits him, so it's too easy to forget that it's the little chap with the tiny hands somewhere behind him who's responsible for this classy little unit.
