Tom Waits- ROMEO BLEEDING: LIVE FROM AUSTIN- DVD- 2009- IMC Music Ltd.- 8712177054886- 300 grn
ROMEO BLEEDING: LIVE FROM AUSTIN is a live album by Tom Waits, first released in 2009 on Immortal/IMC Music Ltd. The album was filmed and recorded on December 5, 1978 in Austin, Texas. This album is not approved by the artist. This seems to be from the Blue Valentine tour. The sound is all right, but the songs and the performance are excellent! The key was the live version of "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis". This DVD is a great addition to the collection. Waits, who sat behind a piano for most of the concert, was mainly backed by a small jazz trio. He chain smoked throughout the concert, and occasionally stepped out from behind his piano to tell these amazing stories about things like the infamous Chelsea Hotel in New York, and characters like a guy named "Small Change," who got rained on with his own thirty eight.
PERSONNEL: Tom Waits - vocals, piano; Herbert Hardesty - saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn; Arthur Richardson - guitar; John Thomassie - drums; Greg Cohen - bass guitar.
Why is this half-Texas concert from 1978 doubly remarkable? On the one hand, the audio and visual material had been lost for a long time. On the other hand, it is the only official testimony of the "Blue Valentines" tour. Tom Waits buries the first phase of his artistic career here. From the very first few seconds of this DVD the listener is screaming at the most desperate, unfortunate trumpets this standard has ever seen. The line "Your Mama's good looking" is a lie hidden under an inch of make-up, even by the light of a dim streetlight. In addition, Tom weaves in his spoken "Burma Shave" story. This lost romance full of bursting dreams ends with 11 minutes of thunderous applause. The trio "Annie's Back In Town/I Wish I Was In New Orleans/Ain't Gonna Rain" is typical Waits ballad style. After the drunkenly sluggish homage to jazz's birthplace, "A Sweet Little Bullet From A Pretty Blue Gun" takes us on a tour of the rain-soaked alleys of little crooks who end up laying down their guns at the adored dancers and curb swallows. Waits dedicated the ballad "On The Nickel" to all the homeless and stranded in the world. Full of compassion, the master intones to a gentle piano playing: "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but i always will be true / And when your mama is dead and gone, I'll sing this lullaby just for you." This perhaps the most touching Waits ballad ever laid the foundation for Tom's own foundation, which today helps homeless people around the world. Hard boiled it goes on. In the best James Ellroy tradition, "Romeo Is Bleeding" sketches a police officer murder and the street gangs of the swing era, roused by fear and boasting. The track sounds like a rob-murdering pimp version of a Django Reinhardt gig. The singer stumbles through this number like a hunted, wondering wolf, until his band catches him at the end. For the following topic of "Silent Night/Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis", stubborn Waits already received a lot of opposition at the time: there were numerous complaints and attempts at defamation by religious-conservative organizations. The concluding duo "Small Change/Hey, Bigspender/Small Charge" finally gets a completely different timbre through a performance reduced to voice and bebop saxophone. And then, after just under an hour, it's suddenly over. If you don't want to wake up yet, just play this half-world pearl again and again and again... Don't know why Tom doesn't release more of his live stuff on video (Big Time is still not available on DVD) anyway it makes these old recordings a real treasure.
