SPEAK OF THE DEVIL is a live album by English heavy metal vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, released in November 1982. It is a album consisting entirely of live renditions of songs. A Japan-only official release video concert also entitled SPEAK OF THE DEVIL has been available since the early 1980s. This video release has no relation to the album of the same name, consisting of Osbourne's early solo material. This video release features an outdoor live performance recorded on 23rd June 1982, at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre with the same backing band as the album of the same name. The recording was done by MTV and originally broadcast on the cable network on 31st October 1982, under the title MTV Halloween Live from Irvine. Being an outdoor show, wind resulted in insufficient haze from the fog machines to reflect the laser light show, and thus they weren't used. The lasers seen in the final edit were added later in post-production. On 16th July 1982, the band members gathered at Jet Records' offices in Los Angeles to watch the final edit. Osbourne was unhappy with the laser show and stormed out of the room. Bassist Rudy Sarzo later observed him in the parking lot, drunkenly letting the air out of the producer's tires in protest. This video was finally released in the US in DVD format on 17th July 2012 from Eagle Rock Entertainment. Following its US release, this DVD has been met with positive responses. Everything from the stage sets, to the action on stage and the powerful Ozzy persona make this live performance, in a word, fantastic.
PERSONNEL: Ozzy Osbourne - vocals; Don Airey - keyboards; Tommy Aldridge - drums; Brad Gillis - guitar; Rudy Sarzo - bass.
The show SPEAK OF THE DEVIL was part of the delayed continuation of the Diary Of A Madman Tour following the tragic death of Randy Rhoads in March '82 in a flying accident during the early part of the tour. The show features guitarist Brad Gillis who was brought in to replace Randy Rhoads. The concert is a perfect snapshot of Ozzy Osbourne's live performances in the eighties with dramatic staging and masses of energy with a setlist based around his first two solo albums and a few Black Sabbath classics. Ozzy has always been one of heavy metal's great frontmen and, despite the difficult circumstances, this show captures him at his absolute best. The DVD release is still an epic, classic show. The castle façade on stage is just as iconic as the performance from the band. Every one of these musicians brings their A game to the table here. Brad Gillis is the real star here - he does not merely mimic the late Randy Rhoads, but puts his own spin on things as well. Tommy Aldridge even gets to steal the show for a few moments with a barehanded drum solo. The assortment of tracks from the first two Osbourne solo records is solid, and all of them sound great in the live form they are presented in here. You even get to see the band stage a mock hanging of a dwarf named “Ronnie” - no doubt a stab at the short-statured Ronnie James Dio, who was then fronting Black Sabbath. It is a shame that this lineup of Osbourne’s band did not record an actual studio album. Brad Gillis is a kick-ass guitarist and definitely makes his presence known here. The always-dependable bassist Rudy Sarzo is at his finest as well. If you are an Ozzy Osbourne fan, both of these often-overlooked releases, video and audio alike, are highly recommended. This is an era of Osbourne’s career that all too often gets neglected, but did spawn two superb live releases that are worth your time and money if you are a fan.
