(NYA PS 03) NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES PERFORMANCE Series Disc 03.
Released In HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital).
LIVE AT MASSEY HALL 1971 is a live album by Canadian musician Neil Young. Released in March 13, 2007, the album features a solo, acoustic performance from Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 19 January 1971 during the Journey Through The Past Solo Tour. It is the second release in Young's Archives Performance Series. From the Neil Young Archives Performance Series available for the First Time. The Neil Young Archives Performance Series continues with this release (“Disc 03”), a double album featuring Young’s acoustic performance at Massey Hall in Toronto on January 19, 1971. This performance could not be more strikingly different from the 1970 recording. Rather than featuring an electric backup band, this record showcases Young as a solo performer, accompanying himself on guitar and piano in front of a very appreciative “homeland” audience. LIVE AT MASSEY HALL was released as a two-disc set that contained a CD of the show and a DVD containing footage from a performance at the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut in high fidelity audio.
PERSONNEL: Neil Young – acoustic guitar, piano, vocals.
The concert at Massey Hall was not actually filmed. Footage appears of Young performing a number of tracks which is instead sourced from a performance at the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut three days later (filmed for a 1971 TV documentary by Dutch documentary maker Wim Van Der Linden, which was never broadcast in The Netherlands but it was in Germany, with the German title Swing In Mit Neil Young) but has the Massey Hall audio dubbed on top. Where there was a lack of video performances of certain songs, footage of the reel-to-reel tape recorder used onstage fills the screen instead. The DVD also contains performances of "The Needle And The Damage Done" and "Journey Through The Past" on The Johnny Cash Show (filmed February 1971), an interview from the aforementioned Swing In Mit Neil Young TV documentary and footage of Young meeting to discuss the Archives project on his Broken Arrow Ranch (filmed February 1997). The album is beautifully packaged in a matte-finish color gatefold with vintage photographs front, back and center. An insert provides very comprehensive information about the recording and production of the album. The innersleeves are “Japanese Style” in that they are not square but rounded on one side. They are also made of a very flimsy plastic, and are challenging to replace in the jacket without crinkling them. Given the availability of heavier plastic (or even the more traditional plastic-lined paper innersleeves that Classic used to use), this is a minor miscue. So in sum, this is an record well worth adding to the collection, even if Neil Young is not your favorite musician.
Comes In A Gatefold Cardboard Sleeve With A Large Sticker On The Cover And Two Insert-Flyers.
