ZINC ALLOY AND THE HIDDEN RIDERS OF TOMORROW … A CREAMED CAGE IN AUGUST is an album by English rock band T. Rex, the ninth since Tyrannosaurus Rex's debut LP. It was released on 1st February 1974 on the T.Rex record label, distributed by EMI. It was the first and only album to be released under the moniker Marc Bolan & T. Rex. ZINC ALLOY AND THE HIDDEN RIDERS OF TOMORROW was met with bemusement by the listening public due to its style incorporating funk and R&B influences. The sleeve only had to show the subtitle A CREAMED CAGE IN AUGUST but EMI decided to add a banner with the name of the band before printing. The band had asked that the initial pressings were a multi-layered triple gatefold sleeve, a latticework image of the current cover featuring singer Marc Bolan's face in a pale gold surround, meant to fold-out into the A CREAMED CAGE IN AUGUST of the subtitle. A companion release to the later Demon Records reissue, entitled CHANGE (THE ALTERNATE ZINC ALLOY), was released in 1995 and contained alternative versions, studio rough mixes, and demos of the main album and bonus tracks. The two were combined for a 2CD edition, which was released by Edsel and Rhino Records on 13th August 2002. Expanded to a 43 track double CD, this is the 1974 full-length by British glam cult heroes Marc Bolan & T. Rex.

By this time, Marc Bolan's fanbase was shrinking while Marc and his ego continued to swell. Things started to change in 1972, when David Bowie introduced the world to Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. Bolan, not one to be outdone, began to take a more electrified and dystopian stance. Even the title, ZINC ALLOY AND THE HIDDEN RIDERS OF TOMORROW, is an obvious nod to that album, but that’s where the comparisons end. Bowie’s was a carefully crafted and strangely sympathetic underworld. Bolan’s world is full of rapid-fire, nonsensical wordplay and over-the-top arrangements. The excess isn’t simply contained to the music, but indicative of Bolan’s lyrical verbosity. Each album added more musical elements than the last, and by the release of T. Rex, Bolan and producer Tony Visconti had struck upon a magical balance of poet and pop star. ZINC ALLOY AND THE HIDDEN RIDERS OF TOMORROW is even more excessive than his last, with a full rock band, choir and orchestra in tow. In some ways, the album is a return to form and a lot of fun. But in other ways, it’s a reminder that the golden age of Bolan was behind us. Despite these flaws, those drawn to Bolan’s giddy, glammy arrangements and magnetic personality are likely to enjoy this record for what it is. It's an attempt to bring T. Rex into a more contemporary rock setting. You don’t buy Marc Bolan albums expecting to hear complex polyrhythms. You do expect him to color your world with a little technicolor magic, and ZINC ALLOY AND THE HIDDEN RIDERS OF TOMORROW is a colorful record, even if the magic was beginning to fade.
