T. Rex were a British rock band, formed in 1967 by singer/songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. The band formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex, releasing four albums as an acoustic duo under that name and winning a following among the British "underground" audience. After earning success in the early and mid-1970s, the band broke up after Bolan was killed in a 1977 car accident. OBSERVATIONS is a collection of ten early Marc Bolan tracks recorded in 1967 or 1968, all of which can be found on the album The Beginning Of Doves alongside the ten other songs these are intended to be packaged with. Castle Records' 2002 reissue of The Beginning Of Doves adds 17 bonus tracks to the previous release, a total of 27 more tracks than those which appear here, making it the quintessential edition. Combined with MISTY MIST album you would get the full set of tracks. The opener "Jasper C Debussy" was an early flop single. As a single, “Hippy Gumbo” had much more work put into it, featuring orchestration and double bass. It's moody and haunting with all its talk about chopping you up for firewood. It was clearly Bolan’s first masterpiece, the string section is particularly effective. But “Jasper C. Debussy” is what opens the album, with Bolan stating ''fuck off or keep cool''. The tune is a strange circus blues featuring a piano, and although Bolan’s voice is ridiculously whiney the tune itself is fast-paced and fun. “Beyond The Risin' Sun” is punchy, with expressive bongos and a crazy whistle - it's insane, and although it sounds unbelievably dated, where Bolan sings his la-la-las at the end does anticipate his later work. “Black And White Incident” is an original blues number where Marc Bolan uses a more restrained vocal, and demonstrate that he wasn't yet very capable on guitar. “Observations” is a much better tune though, with an age-old melody, but he adds his own mannerisms and shrieks to make it stand out. “Eastern Spell” is an excellent folk tune, dripping with the character of Bolan’s future output. It has a great vocal melody and is easily one of the better songs here. “Sarah Crazy Child” also rules, being a fast-paced good-time song with background vocals that are perfectly out-of-focus, and where Bolan lets rip with his soon-to-be standard scat singing of sounds rather than words. And “Rings Of Fortune” is another very good track with an excellent melody - it's a little more sinister, and close to matching Bolan's eventual sound. In fact, virtually every song here is a very sloppy but interesting track. None are over 3 minutes in length, and some aren't even 2 minutes, but each track reveals the genius that Marc Bolan most clearly was - whether it be solo on acoustic, backed by orchestration, or just by Steve Took pounding away on bongos. Bolan’s presence shines through.
