Among the latter are Tony Sheridan, for whom the early Beatles acted as a backup band, various members of Lennon's pre-Beatles group, The Quarrymen, Apple general manager Alistair Taylor and Julia Baird, Lennon's sister. Choice audio quotes from Paul McCartney and George Martin are pure gold. Though the film covers familiar, major events in Lennon's life, the anecdotes and insights will strike most fans as new, while unguarded opinions of old confidantes are sometimes startling. This unauthorized 2003 biography of John Lennon covers the well-known basics of the legendary ex-Beatle's Liverpudlian upbringing, his band's rapid rise to worldwide fame, and his post-Beatles years as a solo musician, activist, and family man. The story has been told many times before in much better documentaries, but this film, which relies heavily on familiar photographs and video clips and features a Beatles sound-alike soundtrack, includes something most other works on Lennon lack—interviews with his rarely seen or heard-from his sister. Julia Baird's comments provide insight into Lennon's early years and the siblings' 1970s estrangement. Julia Baird is the clear highlight, but other interviewees include a few friends and ex-Beatles employees and four members of The Quarrymen, the skiffle group that evolved into the Fab Four. Personal stories by chauffer Alf Bicknell and Beatles insider Alistair Taylor are included as a bonus.VERDICT - Not as substantive or insightful as Imagine but on par with the similarly shallow Love Is All You Need. While a welcome surprise, Julia Baird's contributions are not enough to make this worthwhile to anyone but completists.
