Paul McCartney- ALL THE BEST!- 2DVD & CD- 1987/2005- Not On Label- No Barcode- 300 grn
ALL THE BEST! is the second official compilation album of Paul McCartney's music, after 1978's Wings Greatest. It was released on 2nd November 1987 on Capitol Records and Parlophone Records. The album contains tracks from the beginning of his solo career in 1970 up to 1987. The American version has a different track listing, reflecting the popularity of particular songs there. Truth-in-packaging regulations are strained to the breaking point, but if we're talking about Macca the Singles Artist, this compilation does highlight the many sides of a celebrated melodist, bandleader, and hitmaker from the banalities of "My Love" to the electrifying buzz of "Jet". It won't win any stylistic cohesion awards, and followers will miss album tracks like "Picasso's Last Words" and "That Would Be Something". But ALL THE BEST! collects the more popular Wings hits and throws in some necessary rarities, star duets, live cuts, and soundtrack odds and ends. Technically, ALL THE BEST! was the first compilation of McCartney's solo material, since Wings Greatest covered songs released under the Wings aegis. Well, there is considerable overlap between the two records -- no less than ten of that album's 12 songs are here, yet only the hard-rocking "Hi Hi Hi" is truly missed - although the seven new songs do give this album a different character, for better or worse. With the U.S. version of ALL THE BEST!, which has four different songs than its British counterpart, the balance shifts toward the positive, since it simply boasts a better selection of songs. Yes, "Once Upon A Long Ago", the single offered as bait on the British ALL THE BEST!, isn't here, but it's not missed since two of the four songs exclusive to the American version are among McCartney's best solo singles ("Junior's Farm" and "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey") and the other two are good adult contemporary easy listening (the previously non-LP "Goodnight Tonight" and "With A Little Luck"). These songs add to the retrospective, although it's still not perfect -- such highlights as "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Take It Away" really should have been included. However, as a cross section of McCartney's solo singles, this is very, very good. It may be a little heavy on the schmaltz at times, yet this is still mainstream pop craft of the highest order. This compilation is a celebration of Paul McCartney the pop star, rather than Paul McCartney the rock star, and it does its job supremely well. Other compilations make a better case for McCartney as a writer and performer of substance. Fine pop statements for sure, but the type of material that gives critics all the ammunition they think they need. Despite all this, there’s a healthy serving best post-The Beatles material too. As much as you want to overlook Macca' achievements, no one can criticise his mastery of the melody and his ability to string together a memorable hook or chorus. Sometimes this results in inconsequential fluff, sometimes it’s a rock classic. The point is, he gets results. This compilation is about the pop hits, not the serious songwriter that all music fans know that McCartney can be when he wants to be. That’s the beauty of Macca’ career, one person can raid his back catalogue for commercial pop, while another can cherry pick enough material to present a compelling argument for his solo career to be the source of some of the greatest rock songs of the 70s. If you prefer Paul McCartney the rock star, then maybe this compilation isn’t for you. For fans of his pop material, dive right in, but be aware of the distinct whiff of cheese that will waft your way from time to time.
