ERIC CLAPTON: LIFE IN 12 BARS is a 2017 documentary film about Eric Clapton, directed and co-produced by Lili Fini Zanuck. The film covers Clapton's early childhood, including the trauma of his mother leaving him to be raised by his grandparents, and his career, consisting of "a single-minded mission to raise the profile of the blues in popular culture". Clapton's tragedies, including his infatuation with Patti Boyd, then the wife of his best friend George Harrison, his struggles with drugs and alcoholism, and the death of his 4-year old son Conor are highlighted. Clapton and Zanuck previously worked together on the 1991 film Rush. The film was released on home video on June 8, 2018. This documentary contextualizes Eric Clapton’s role in contemporary music and cultural history. Told through his own words, it reflects on his traumatic childhood, his difficult struggle with drugs and alcohol, the loss of his son and how he always found his inner strength and healing in music. It features extensive interviews with Clapton himself, along with his family, friends, musical collaborators, contemporaries and heroes – including late music icons B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison. Directed by Oscar winner Lili Fini Zanuck. Eric Clapton is the only ever three-time-inductee to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, is an 18-time Grammy Award winner and widely renowned as one of the greatest performers of all time. But behind the scenes is restlessness and tragedy. Clapton's quest to grow his artistic voice left fans surprised as he constantly quit successful bands. His isolated pursuit of his craft, and fear of selling out, served as a catalyst for his evolution as an artist. This film’s release was preceded by news that it contains admissions of Clapton using racial epithets and voicing support for right-wing politicians back in the day. This it does, but in context the remarks come across as what they obviously were: the self-destructive ravings of a man temporarily out of his mind on drink, drugs and despair. Rather than his true feelings, these aberrations seem to reveal the exact opposite of those feelings.
