TOMMY is a 1972 album by the London Symphony Orchestra and English Chamber Choir, conducted and directed by David Measham, performing arrangements by Wil Malone of The Who's 1969 album Tommy with additional arrangements by James Sullivan. The project was conceived and produced by Lou Reizner, initially with Rod Stewart singing Roger Daltrey's main role. As Pete Townshend and Daltrey became more involved, Stewart's role was reduced to singing "Pinball Wizard". The studio version of the orchestral Tommy was issued in boxed-set LP format in October 1972. It featured original artwork and photography, which used a pinball as its main motif, was designed by Tom Wilkes and Craig Braun and won the Best Album Package Grammy in 1974. The art was by Richard Amsel, Robert Heindel, Jim Manos, Alex Gnidziejko, Wilson McLean, Doug Johnson, David Edward Byrd, Robert Grossman, Charles White III, Richard Harvey and Mark English.

This all-star production of TOMMY is a love-it or hate-it affair. Conceived by producer Lou Reizner, it initially got the endorsement of Townshend, who was present for all of the sessions, saw it at one point as a realization of some of what he'd visualized when he'd first written the piece. Others felt that it was an overblown, leaden interpretation, weighed down by the sheer mass of the 100-piece orchestra and the vast orchestration of the music. Originally released by Ode Records in a slipcased box with a full libretto, it became a million-seller, however, and was one of the more elaborately conceived and packaged rock releases of its era. Despite its elephantine dimensions, a certain coldness that comes with it, and some problems with the dynamic range that not even the CD solves entirely, this is a beautiful interpretation of the piece and several of the songs - all of Daltrey's numbers are outstanding, and Clayton ("The Acid Queen"), Havens ("Eyesight To The Blind"), Stewart ("Pinball Wizard"), and Harris ("Go To The Mirror Boy") seldom, if ever, had better moments on record. The majestic conducting of David Measham lends itself well to "Welcome" and "See Me, Feel Me," while Malone's arrangements impart a few unexpected and beautiful timbral effects to the "Overture", "Amazing Journey" and "Sparks," as well as all of those numbers already mentioned. CD reissue recreates the original booklet and is very cleanly mastered, though some work should have been done on the dynamic range, since the soft passages still sound a little too soft. A lavish production of the first Rock Opera, written and originally performed and recorded by Pete Townshend and The Who in 1969, which was staged and recorded three years later by the London Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Choir and set of soloist, which sounds like a who's who of British Rock superstars at the time. The overall production and performance are stunning and remain a symbol of what was possible at that time, with no effort and money spent in order to make great music. In many respects this is the best ever version of TOMMY and an absolute must to any Classic Rock collector. This edition includes a lavish booklet with the original extensive graphics. A true collector's item!
