The line forms here for the world’s greatest and possibly most influential band – Led Zeppelin! With ''Dazed And Confused'', ''Stairway To Heaven'', ''Whole Lotta Love'' and more signature performances, this mesmerizing movie built around Zep’s famed ’73 NYC concerts is convincing proof why. THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is a 1976 concert film featuring the English rock band Led Zeppelin. The filming took place during the summer of 1973, during three nights of concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with additional footage shot at Shepperton Studios. The film premiered three years later on 20th October 1976 at Cinema I in New York, on 21st October 1976 at Fox Wilshire in Beverly Hills, and at Warner West End Cinema in London two weeks later. The DVD of the film was released on 31st December 1999. The film was the band's special way of giving their millions of friends what they had been clamouring for – a personal and private tour of Led Zeppelin. For the first time the world has a front row seat on Led Zeppelin.
CAST: John Bonham, Richard Cole, Peter Grant, Roy Harper, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Colin Rigdon, Derek Skilton.
PERSONNEL: John Bonham – drums, percussion; John Paul Jones – bass guitar, keyboards; Jimmy Page – guitars, theremin, backing vocals; Robert Plant – vocals, tambourine.
For its New York premiere, Cinema I was equipped with a quadrophonic sound system hired from Showco in Dallas. The film performed well at the box office, grossing an estimated $10 million by 1977. Despite this, the film was reviewed negatively for its perceived amateurish production and self-indulgent content, with the fantasy sequences in particular coming in for some of the harshest criticism. However, amongst fans the film has retained its popularity. Until the release of Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003, THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME was the only official live visual document that was accessible to followers of the band. It became a cult favourite at late-night movie houses, and its subsequent release on video and then DVD has ensured a growing base of fans. In material for Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003 to include footage from this same series of concerts. For all of its technical faults, many today view the film as an interesting historical document that captured the band at a particular point in time when its popularity was at around its peak, and, on a more general level, as an accurate representation of the excesses of the music and show-business industries in the 1970s. In truth, 2003's DVD package houses better live performances. Led Zeppelin's 1976 film THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME mixes their 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden with fantasy scenes and footage of the group members backstage and at home. Intense, extended performances of classics like "Dazed And Confused", "No Quarter", and "Whole Lotta Love" don't always blend well with the hallucinatory imagery, but die-hard Zep fans will appreciate the set's uniquely '70s feel and THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME remains a distinctive part of Led Zeppelin's history.
