The Beatles- THE FIRST U.S. VISIT- DVD- 1964/2003-
- Apple Corps Limited/Capitol Records Inc./EMI Records Ltd.- 724359936093- 300 grn
THE FIRST U.S. VISIT is a 1990 re-edited version of the 1964 16mm documentary What's Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A., about The Beatles' first visit to America in February 1964. Made by documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles, it documents The Beatles' U.S. trip as they travel to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Miami Beach. Most of the non-musical footage is of The Beatles in hotel rooms, often acting irreverently in front of the camera. The new version is 83 minutes long, two minutes longer than the original. Among other changes, it adds 22 minutes of The Beatles' live recorded performances on The Ed Sullivan Show and removes several scenes with Brian Epstein. The original film premiered on 13th November 1964 as a special episode of the CBS variety series The Entertainers. It is still shown at various festivals, such as Silverdocs in 2008, and was shown at a special screening at the Maysles Cinema in New York on 18th November 2011 in honor of Albert Maysles' 85th birthday. In addition to the live performances, there are also studio Beatles recordings heard on the program's soundtrack. Among them are "She Loves You", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Love Me Do", "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "It Won't Be Long". Other recordings featured are "Navy Blue" by Diane Renay and "Pride And Joy" by Marvin Gaye. THE FIRST U.S. VISIT is music documentary following the band as they give press conferences, visit nightclubs, and play live on the Ed Sullivan Show and at the famous Washington Coliseum. Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary THE FIRST U.S. VISIT by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to The Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film, also known as What's Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A., shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans. The performance segments alone are a must for fans. The three Ed Sullivan appearances show a great cross section of their hits at the time, including "All My Loving", "I Saw Her Standing There", a beautifully delivered "This Boy" by John Lennon, and a wobbly "I Saw Her Standing There". The blurry, badly mic'd footage of the concert at the Washington Coliseum shows the Beatles acting as their own roadies, setting up their instruments. The platform Ringo Starr drums on lurches ominously with each downbeat. It was a more innocent, exuberant time, to be sure, and this sweet documentary lets The Beatles phenomenon speak for itself.
