Creedence Clearwater Revival- THE EARLY YEARS- CD- 2001- No UPC- 100 grn
Creedence Clearwater Revival were the top American Rock Band in the Late 1960s. Their recordings sold millions on little independent record company Fantasy Records. However, the contract that they signed with Fantasy was filled with loopholes and pitfalls common to Independent (and certain major) record companies – things like clock stopping clauses and giving the company the publishing rights to their songs. When CCR (as they were popularly known) went to Woodstock as headliners and compared notes with other high echelon bands, they discovered what they made for their recordings was a pittance. This was the least of their problems, as the contract that they signed when they were in their late teens continues to haunt them over half a century later. This paper will explore these inequities in detail, while pointing out that this was not unusual, especially for independent recording companies.
