DEFINITIV COLLECTION: 2 CDs Of Digitally Remastered Hits!
Universal's GOLD Series.
Traffic GOLD is a two-disc compilation album by the psychedelic rock band Traffic. It contains at least one song from each album except On The Road, Far From Home, and The Last Great Traffic Jam and was released in July 26, 2005. It also features highlights from all of Traffic's critically acclaimed and bestselling albums. After spending the majority of his late-teen years being mistaken for Ray Charles, the Spencer Davis Group's "little" Stevie Winwood found himself at the helm of one of the most promising and volatile bands of the late '60/early '70s, Traffic. The initial core foursome of Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood successfully went from psychedelic art rockers to blues-rock "jamathoners" without losing any momentum, cranking out both concise, pop-oriented radio singles ("Paper Sun," "Dear Mr. Fantasy") and rambling epics ("Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys," "John Barleycorn") with equal amounts of elegance and swagger. Despite numerous lineup changes, side projects, and endless clashes between Winwood and Mason, the group lasted well into the '70s, a good chunk of which appears here on the double-disc, liner-note-heavy GOLD. While previous Island collections like Feelin' Alright: The Very Best Of Traffic and 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection dutifully cover the radio essentials, GOLD provides both newbies and longtime fans with a fully stocked buffet of fan favorites and album highlights.
PERSONNEL: Steve Winwood – vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass; Jim Capaldi – drums, percussion, vocals; Chris Wood – flute, saxophone, keyboards; Dave Mason – vocals, guitar, sitar, bass, harmonica; Rosko Gee, David Hood, Ric Grech – bass, violin, guitar; Roger Hawkins, Jim Gordon – drums; Rebop Kwaku Baah – percussion, congas; Barry Beckett – keyboards; Randall Bramblett – flute, saxophone, keyboards, bass pedals; Michael McEvoy – keyboards, guitar, viola; Walfredo Reyes, Jr. – percussion, drums.
Well, Traffic. Originally an excellent psychedelic pop/rock band, then a more mediocre 'serious' blues-based jam-rock band. "Paper Sun" and "Hole In My Shoe" are wonderful hits, but the guys in the group were so damn serious they left the songs off their debut album. "Coloured Rain", "No Face, No Name, No Number", "Heaven Is In Your Mind", "Smiling Phases" and "Dear Mr. Fantasy" are however quite good. The 1968 stuff, by contrast, isn't worth anything – excluding "Feelin' Alright" which is a relatively good boogie rock number. "Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring" isn't completely bad either. "Shanghai Noodle Factory" is quite great again, "Medicated Goo" isn't bad, and "Empty Pages" turns out to be a late gem within the Traffic catalogue. The CD 2? Waste of plastic and aluminium.
