Johnny Van Zant may not have the innate swagger of his late brother, Ronnie, Skynyrd's former lead singer: But give him three steps and he'll saunter a good Dixie mile in Ronnie's hat. Lynyrd Skynyrd serve notice that they have indeed returned, and with a vengeance....an impressive mix of Southern boogie and hard-edged rock that makes no apologies for the genre. THE LAST REBEL is the seventh studio album by American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released in 1993. It is the last album to feature drummer Kurt Custer and guitarist Randall Hall.
PERSONNEL: Gary Rossington – guitar; Ed King – guitar; Johnny Van Zant – lead vocals; Leon Wilkeson – bass; Billy Powell – piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer; Randall Hall – guitar; Kurt Custer – drums, percussion; Dale Krantz Rossington – background vocals; Tim Lindsey – additional bass.
After nearly a decade apart, a reconstructed Lynyrd Skynyrd toured together in the late '80s, and became a full-time band again by the '90s - returning to the grind of recording and touring. The second studio album of the "Johnny Van Zant-era," 1993's THE LAST REBEL, was comparable to its predecessor two years earlier, 1991, since it didn't stray far from Skynyrd's classic '70s output: tough rockers with a country edge. While individual standouts would include such southern rock ditties as "Good Lovin's Hard to Find" and the title track, THE LAST REBEL would signal the last studio album that included the talents of original Skynyrd guitarist Ed King.
