BY YOUR SIDE is the fifth studio album by American rock band The Black Crowes. It was released on 24th December 1998 on American Recordings and on 12th January 1999 on Columbia Records, following the band's move from American Recordings, after second guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Johnny Colt had left the band in 1997. Audley Freed and Sven Pipien were hired as the new guitarist and bassist, respectively, although Rich Robinson played all the guitar parts on the album. All right, we know The Crowes are going to sound like The Stones, and by no means is this an insult. The question is, what era of Stones - the assured bluster and raunchy groove of Exile On Main Street or, gasp, the going-through-the-motions of Steel Wheels? Thankfully, their first studio effort in two and a half years tends mostly toward the former. The Robinson boys have actually managed to magnify both their gritty Southern soul with funky keyboards and vibrant background chants and their heavy-hitting majesty with screeching guitar and thumping percussion simultaneously and there's still room for some appealing hooks. That's not to say that their songwriting has improved or that their musical vision has broadened considerably. At worst, BY YOUR SIDE is still a big improvement over 1996's often listless Three Snakes And One Charm. At best, it's living proof that the classic Stones swagger--refracted through The Crowes' mounting years of experience--still holds significant sway. Being called the Stones Of The 1990s is still a compliment, albeit a left-handed one, and at this point they do The Stones a damn sight better than The Stones themselves.
PERSONNEL: Chris Robinson – vocals and harmonica; Rich Robinson – guitar; Steve Gorman – drums; Eddie Harsch - keyboards; Sven Pipien – bass guitar; Dirty Dozen Brass Band – horns; Zoe Thrall – flute; Curtis King, Cindy Mizelle, Tawatha Agee, Brenda White King, Vanees Thomas – background vocals.
Between Shake Your Money Maker and Three Snakes And One Charm, The Black Crowes evolved from a muscular, Stonesy hard rock outfit to full-fledged modern-day Southern rockers, drawing from a wealth of blues, country, folk, and rock styles to create a sprawling, fluid sound that was simultaneously traditional and distinctive. Singer Chris Robinson's throaty holler suits the sweaty material, and brother Rich Robinson's slide guitar and Dixie-shaded jams punch up the Southern-rock revelry. The Black Crowes do more than simply Cuisinart the old tunes for reuse. The Atlanta-based band seems to recycle classic sounds whole. The problem was, their loose-limbed grooves tended to connect better in concert than on record, especially since they were sacrificing songs for the sake of sound, which in turn was decreasing their audience. Aware of the situation, The Crowes went back to their roots with BY YOUR SIDE. The Crowes hit harder than they had since their debut, yet they retain the sonic detail that reared its head on Amorica, adding pianos, choirs, and scores of other flourishes throughout the record. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable record, their most satisfying and accessible effort since The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion. Not that it's necessarily in that league, it lacks the parade of great songs that elevate that album above all their others, but it does find The Crowes in lean fighting form for the first time in years, proving that they're possibly the best straight-ahead rock and roll band of the '90s. This album still manages to radiate enough wild-eyed, amped-up brio to renew one's faith in the restorative powers of good ole Southern-fried rock and roll.
