In 1963, a youth-driven cultural revolution exploded onto the streets. Swinging London flooded Europe and America with its music, fashion and art. A young and restless post-war generation were making their own excitement and adventure. They rejected the music, clothes and social mores of their parents, picking up guitars, scissors and paintbrushes to take over stage, radio, television, galleries and catwalks. They filled pubs and clubs with a rock and roll sound whose roots reached back into the great blues music of the ’50s. Between the heartfelt pop of The Beatles, the subversive grooves of The Rolling Stones and the space-age strangeness of David Bowie, popular culture underwent rapid and unprecedented evolution. The fusion of creative abundance and an insatiable public appetite for novelty created a momentum that fuelled an American rock awakening which carried on into the ’70s, and beyond. The first Rolling Stones recordings of ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN were heard on the Saturday Club BBC radio broadcast on October 26, 1963. It was recorded another three times for radio broadcast, but unlike The Beatles or Led Zeppelin The Stones have never released their BBC performances from the 1960's. So we are left with unauthorized titles like the "Cops & Robbers" and "Beautiful Delilah" as the sources for the various versions of this early Stones favorite. This is one of the first recordings from the legendary Stones, recorded in 1963. This set contains some of their most influential music and spans the period in the '60s when they were truly The Beatles' only rivals. A very interesting CD. It's nice to hear some of the songs they recorded but apparently did not make it to the albums that were released back when they were really starting out in to the rock and roll world. If you like the early Stones rhythm and blues period, then you will like this CD.
