Johnny Hallyday- LIVE AT MONTREUX 1988- 2 CD- 2008-
- Montreux Sounds SA/Eagle Rock Entertainment Limited- 5034504137622- 500 grn
The closest thing France ever had to a rock 'n' roll star, Johnny Hallyday remains a phenomenon in his native country, selling over 100 million records. Here, he performs a selection of his best known songs to a sell-out crowd at Montreux in 1988. Johnny Hallyday is a French icon and superstar. With a career going back into the fifties he remains the best selling artist of all time in the French speaking world. Inspired by Elvis Presley and the pioneers of American rock `n' roll he managed to take their energy and sense of rebellion and create something distinctively French. He was an immediate success and has remained so to this day. This concert from Montreux in 1988 captures his electric live show in a far more intimate venue than the vast arenas he usually performs in.
PERSONNEL: Vocals, Guitar - Johnny Hallyday; Guitar - Norbert Krief, Hugo Ripoll; Bass - Bernard Paganotti; Keyboards - Bruno Fontaine, Bertrand Lajudie; Saxophone - Patrick Bourgoin; Drums - Yves Sanna; Backing vocals - Shandi Sinnamon, Lorraine Serra, Érick Bamy.
Following on from his shows at Paris-Bercy Omnisports (15/9/87 – 4/10/87) captured on Johnny A Bercy (1988) this two-disc live album was recorded at the Casino De Montreux (6/7/88). After Johnny’s career was revitalized by working with Michel Berger on the 1985 Rock ‘N’ Roll Attitude album, and with Jean-Jacques Goldman on the 1986 follow-up Gang (presumably named after the Gang recording studio in Paris) the Montreux concert features songs from both long-players, mixed with a few older numbers. This is a terrific-sounding double CD, which appears to benefit from being recorded in a smaller, more intimate venue. Suspect it is an analogue recording, without the harshness sometimes heard in digital recordings. This is one of the best Johnny Hallyday live releases, along with his 1979 Pavillon De Paris show (with a cracking version of ''Lucille'') it is only let down by typically lengthy versions of ''La Musique Que J’Aime'' (9:05) and ''Aimer Vivre'' (11:24) at the end of the set.
